THE WATER DREAM is a powerful and beautiful musical journey of redemption that features giant whale puppets, an aquarium of real water, and Anthony Rapp (Original Broadway cast and feature film of RENT).THE WATER DREAM is the story of Cole Whalebone, a 30-year-old writer living in present-day Seattle. An intellectual who met early success with his first book on mythological criticism, Cole is now suffering from writer's block and insomnia due to his recurring nightmares of the day his mother drowned. When his girlfriend, Sofia, gets fed up and moves out, and Cole poorly handles a public lecture at a local university, he hits bottom.Cole's working-class and charismatic uncle Brian flies in from their hometown of Boston under the pretense of a surprise visit. Brian had been best friends with Cole's father and mother before her death caused a rift. The brothers hardly see each other, and Cole hasn't spoken to his father in years. Brian's advice to Cole is to stop writing about other people's myths and create a myth of his own: a fantasy novel.Cole enters into Geographica, an awe-inspiring world he dreamt up when he was a kid. Here, the Firewolf threatens to destroy the three Peoples of Earth, Wind, and Water. Beautiful giant puppets-- The Walking Whale, Aerowhale, and Blue Whale-- cannot protect them, but guide Cole in his quest to find the Sword of the Sea, that prophecy says will kill the Firewolf.The characters Cole meets in Geographica have real-world parallels: Sofia becomes Sweetwater the witty fool, Brian becomes Seabird the fighting mariner, and the eager students from his lecture become the comedy-trio of wandering minstrel, angry songbird, and snobby donkey, the latter two puppets. This ragtag bunch joins up to help Cole on his adventure, each for his or her own reason.Cole's personal struggles intrude upon his invented narrative. When Sofia tells Cole that she's pregnant, and Cole's father shows up to attempt a reconciliation, only to end up in a fight with Brian, there are consequences in both worlds. Cole must become a hero if he is to face his lifelong fear of water, deal with his mother's death, and repair the relationships with his girlfriend, uncle, and father.The first draft of THE WATER DREAM was written in the fall of 2006, and was recipient of two awards: the Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship Award in Playwriting, and the Citation from Governor Deval Patrick for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts. On December 5th, 2011, an industry reading of THE WATER DREAM will be presented at Shetler Studios in NYC, marking its ninth workshop and seventh public presentation. (Henry) David Arkema trained at L'Ecole Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris, France. He joined with colleagues there, forming an ensemble-based company called Wakka Wakka Productions, with whom he wrote, produced, composed music for, directed, and performed in six original plays, including The Death of Little Ibsen, and Fabrik: The Legend of Moritz Rabinowitz which was nominated for a Drama Desk Award in 2008. David has taught workshops in mime, improvisation, and bouffon at colleges and universities in the U.S.. David has acted in other theatrical productions in New York and abroad, including an adaptation of Agamemnon, which was nominated for a Drama Desk Award in 2005.
